50-50 Arab-European youth training course kicks off today

DOHA: The training course (50-50) which is being organised by the Department of Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in partnership with the Arab League and the Youth Council of Europe, will kick off today at Sharq Village & Spa Doha.

The training programme aims at promoting youth participation and gender equality. The four-day (From November 17 to 20) event will be attended by 40 young people, including youth representing 11 Arab countries namely; Algeria, Somalia, Iraq, Morocco, Yemen, Comoros, Djibouti, Oman, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya and Qatar. In addition to a group of youth from Portugal, Macedonia, Montenegro, France, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Estonia, Czech Republic, Malta, Russia, Latvia, Greece and Germany will partake in this training programme.

The training course which is taking place for the first time in the Arab region focuses on empowering and involving young people in the management of public affairs ensuring equity between men and women in rights, duties and management. There will be significant role for Qatari women in this course, with the participation of three Qatari women as trainers in the workshops along another two trainers from Europe.

On the first day, the course will discuss the division of roles on gender bases, in the management of public affairs. It will discuss how European and Arab countries can provide equal rights for males and females, equal duties, positions and in the process of decision-making.

The focus of the second theme will be on social diversity, standards of human rights and their implementation in the countries participating in this course, and discuss the extent to which young men and women have access to their rights to life, work, economic and financial rights, and freedom of expression, criticism and rights to election (candidacy).

The third day topic deal with the issue of leadership, gender equality and leaders who are running the society’s affairs and the scope of gender equality, and whether the best of competitors are being chosen for job positions on skill basis, and whether the doors are open to all free of discrimination and opportunities are available to all with no differentiation in access to leadership and high positions in the country.

On the fourth day, participants will be taken on a tour visiting Musheireb museums, the Museum of Islamic Art and Katara. Workshops will also be organised during these visits to discuss the challenges facing the participants, areas of cooperation between Arab and European youth, exchange of experiences between the Arab and European countries in youth affairs, in addition to exploring reasons preventing the parties to exchange experiences.

Participants will also review a number of solutions with a view to achieve full cooperation. The training workshop will conclude with recommendations that will be made by the participants and the states they represent.
