CAIRO, March 4 (KUNA) -- The Arab League Permanent Delegates Council on Sunday heaped praise upon His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for serving humanitarian causes worldwide.
The delegates, during the council 149th session, lauded His Highness the Amir for hosting the recent international conference for rebuilding Iraq, affirming that its success depicted the international community's awareness of the magnitude of hardships in Iraq and strength of Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations, said Kuwait's Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab World Affairs.
Abdulaziz Al-Daihani, who made the statement to KUNA on the session margins, said the conferees acclaimed Kuwait's efforts when it chaired the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in February.
These efforts led to holding an informal session, headed by Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, on Middle East peace prospects, with emphasis on implementing the UNSC Resolution 2334.
This resolution, adopted on December 23, 2016, stated that Israeli settlement activities constituted a flagrant violation of the international law and has no legal validity.
Al-Daihani added that the conferees discussed a draft resolution on Syria, affirming Arab support for the State of Kuwait's humanitarian role, namely its lobbying for the 2401 UNSC Resolution calling for humanitarian truce in the troubled country.
The deliberations touched on various issues such as the Palestinian cause.
Earlier during the session, Abdulrahman Al-Rasi, chairman of the 149 Arab League Council session and Saudi Arabia's Undersecretary for International Affairs, called for revamping "the order of joint Arab action." Major challenges facing the Arab states "should not distract us from the central issue, the Palestinian cause," he said, re-affirming Riyadh's unwavering advocacy of peace, restoring legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and establishing the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The situation in Syria requires a sound settlement according to relevant UNSC resolutions for the sake of safeguarding the country's territorial unity, boosting the moderate opposition and forming an interim government, Al-Rasi said.
On Libya, he affirmed his country's support for the legitimate government.
Meanwhile, Djibouti's Permanent Delegate to the Arab League and chair of the previous session, Ambassador Mohammad Harsi, said the former session was marked by a series of meetings and rounds of consultations on Arab causes.
The delegates, he added, had addressed the Arab-Israeli conflict, repercussions of the American decision to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recurring Israeli breaches and Israel's schemes against the Arab security in Africa.
"Some of the most dangerous challenges facing us is mounting terrorism, extremism, Iran's occupation of the three UAE islands, Greater and Lesser Tonbs and Abou Moussa, Eritrea's occupation of territories in Dijoubti and the Arab water crisis," he said.
The 149th session of the Arab League Council for permanent delegates kicked off earlier on Sunday, tackling a host of issues namely activation of the Arab Peace Initiative, as well as developments and violations in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
The participants in the session addressed the Jewish settlements, the separation wall, prisoners, refugees, UNRWA and development on the ground in Palestine, said a League statement released earlier today..
Also on the agenda were the issue of Arab water security and Israel's confiscation of water in the occupied territories, the occupied Golan Heights in Syria, developments in Syria, Lebanon, Libya and Yemen, ways to adopt a unified Arab position regarding the violation of Iraqi sovereignty by the Turkish forces as well as Iran's occupation of the UAE islands.
The Kuwaiti delegation was co-headed by Ambassador Al-Daihani and Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the League Ahmad Al-Baker. (Pick up previous) mfm.ss.rk
