McKenna's death is being investigated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) following concerns raised by his family.
A 47-year-old father of two with a promising future, McKenna's passing has deeply affected those who knew him.
"I still don't want it to be true... I'll never have a friend like Alan again," close friend Mark Parsons said.
McKenna's Moroccan fiancée, Majda, says he suffered a fatal heart attack, however his family and friends are yet to receive an official death certificate or a coroner's report.
They have been informed that McKenna's body was buried in a Casablanca cemetery two days after his death.
Parsons says the circumstances are usual, and wants his remains to be brought back to Adelaide.
"It's essential… I need to be able to have a memorial with them, a funeral, a place to go visit," he stated.
9News understands McKenna was recently hospitalised, with his parents saying he was treated for an abscess on his throat.
Exactly what caused his death in Morocco remains a mystery.
