Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday was attending the EU - League of Arab States summit taking place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on February 24-25, accompanied by Foreign Minister George Katrougalos.

The summit was organised at the initiative of the Austrian Presidency, in order to seek for ways that will enable the EU to efficiently deal with refugee and migrant flows.

During the summit, which is taking place at a crucial moment for stability and security in the southeast of Europe, the delegations will discuss developments of particular importance for the future of the southeastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, where Greece plays a leading role as a pillar of stability.

According to sources in the government, Tsipras is expected to stress that the challenges presented for many countries in the region call for a multilevel cooperation between the European Union and the Arab League instead of short-sighted approaches focused on a single issue; and that the approach that is indeed needed should be equally centered on working together in order to deal with security challenges (Libya, Syria, Middle East) and on promoting a positive agenda through collaborations pertaining to the sectors of the economy, energy and civilisation.

On the sidelines of the summit, Tsipras is expected to meet with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi; Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas; Lebanon Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri and the Arab League Secretary General Aboul Gheit.
