Arab League expresses "annoyance" over Turkish incursion in Syria

CAIRO, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul Gheit expressed Tuesday "annoyance" over recent developments in Syria, particularly in Afrin area, where Turkey's armed forces currently carry out military operations.
Abul Gheit reiterated, in a statement, the League's principled rejection of foreign forces incursion in Syria, adding that such an interference would prolong the conflict and escalate the humanitarian catastrophes on Syrian civilians.
"The Turkish incursion is an additional circle to the extended chain of regional and international interferences in Syria, and it works for the interest of parties that have no regards to the suffering of Syrian people," said the Arab League chief.
The recent military escalation in Syria, whether on the northern front or through the "ruthless" campaign in East Ghouta, reveals the weakness of the de-escalation system, especially since the recent escalation is carried out by parties that are supposed to be acquainted with ceasefire agreements, he said.
Abul Gheit also warned that the ongoing tragic and unfortunate events taking place in Syria are demanding the need for an urgent movement by all effective international powers to attain a real and permanent halt to the violence, evict all foreign troops from Syrian territories, and allow relief and aid agencies to help stranded civilians in conflict-stricken areas.
Such objectives could only be achieved through a political solution, not military, emphasized the Arab League chief. (end) mfm.ma
