The United Arab Emirates yesterday announced that it has filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly accusing Qatari fighter jets of intercepting two civilian aircrafts, the Emirates News Agency reported.

According to the agency two Emirati planes were intercepted while flying on routine routes to Bahrain. Qatar denies the reports.

The UAE described the incident as “reckless and irresponsible”, an unjustified escalation and a threat to the safety of civilian flights as well as a violation of international law.

The complaint was in the form of a note submitted to both the UN Security Council president and the UN General Assembly president.

The UAE sent two similar notes to the Arab League Secretary General and the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General.

Doha has previously denied the accusation and instead accused Abu Dhabi of violating its airspace last Sunday for the third time.

Qatar said Saturday it had informed the United Nations that an Emirati military aircraft bound for Manama violated its airspace in early January, noting that a similar incident took place in December.
