MSU political science alumnus to deliver address

Midwestern State University will be celebrating graduates with a commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Dec. 16.

Richard Young will be the Dec. 16 MSU commencement speaker.

Graduation will be in the Kay Yeager Coliseum of the Multi-Purpose Event Center, 1000 Fifth Street.

There will be approximately 487 candidates receiving degrees.

The commencement address will be given by 1998 MSU graduate Richard Young.

Young is a foreign-trade regulation specialist and co-owner of SECURUS Strategic Trade Solutions LLC.

He has worked for more than 14 years in international affairs, foreign-trade analysis and consulting.

Young is a Wichita Falls native and majored in political science and history during his time at MSU. He was active in the Student Government Association, University Programming Board and the Model Arab League competition.

He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's of Arts. He went on to earn his Master of Arts in political science in 2002, at the University of Georgia.

Young made Wichita Falls home again in 2016, after 13 years living in Washington, D.C., and Austin.

His professional work focuses on providing information and training to industry and government officials about safe and responsible trade of dual-use goods, such as some aerospace products, electronics and machine tools.

Young has traveled to more than 40 countries in his career. He is published in WorldECR: The Journal of Export Controls and Sanctions and has presented at numerous international conference on nonproliferation, trade regulation and compliance.

He is a research fellow with PISCES, the Project on International Security, Commerce and Economic Statecraft, at the University of Albany and State University of New York. The PISCES group conducts research and outreach for a variety of topics including economics and security, proliferation of dual-use technology, border security, illicit trade and international sanctions.

From 2003-2010, Young was an associate at the University of Georgia Center for International Trade and Security. He is a founding member of the group’s Washington, D.C., office.

He co-founded SECURUS in 2010. The consulting group incorporates the experience of foreign-trade professionals with individuals who work in law, public policy, international affairs, and government service. The group specializes in navigating trade and regulations with East Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.

The SECURUS group was named export controls consultant of the year by World ECR in 2016.
