Qatar- Call to develop abilities of the disabled

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education stressed the need to prepare and qualify those who work with persons with disabilities and ways to develop their performance and abilities in accordance with the international quality standards of institutions working in the field of people with disabilities so that they would reach the level of education desired by the state and their integration in educational and community activities with their healthy counterparts.
This came during the speech of the Secretary-General of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Dr. Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti (pictured), in the opening of the national training workshop on awareness and guidance in the field of persons with disabilities, which the commission organizes in cooperation with the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Doha-based Arab Educational Training Center for Gulf States.
Dr. Al Sulaiti explained that the workshop discusses the new and modern techniques in preparing and qualifying workers in the field of disability, pointing out that there are personal characteristics that those dealing with people with disabilities should possess such as compassion, love and patience. She pointed out that teachers, supervisors and social workers must have the skills, educational competencies and advanced knowledge in accordance with scientific and educational methods that help them to assist the disabled to reach the appropriate and successful integration with their healthy peers.
She added that those working with people with disabilities should have the skills to communicate with all sectors of society surrounding the disabled person, whether at the educational institution such as school administration and faculty in order to convince them the importance of receiving a disabled child and the requirements of integration with colleagues in the class, or to communicate with the outside community to inform them about the right ways to deal with the disabled, including the child's family, colleagues, and the surrounding community.
The secretary general of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science stressed the importance of developing training, rehabilitation and compensatory programs for staff working in the areas of disability, in order to help the disabled child overcome disability and its barriers, and to give him alternative means to live with his condition, to reach the desired goal, which is teaching disabled children the basic skills necessary for independence. She explained that education methods for people with disabilities are diverse, and in need of modernization and continuous development, and wished that the national training workshop generates the new and innovative in this aspect.
